Cittaslow UK Holds Its First Annual Conference

The first Cittaslow UK Annual Conference was held in Berwick upon Tweed on 10 October and attracted over 30 delegates from Cittaslow towns across the UK.

A very full day of presentations and workshops discussed the future plans of Cittaslow UK and its role within Cittaslow International.

Special welcomes were given to Pier Giorgio Oliveti, the Director of Cittaslow International, who travelled from Italy to join us, and Mike Chapman, Chairman of Cittaslow Sturminster Newton, our newest member of Cittaslow UK.

The day included a particularly poignant moment when Jack Coburn, National Co-ordinator of Cittaslow UK, paid tribute to the late Graeme Kidd, who sadly died earlier this year.

Graeme led Ludlow's application to be recognised as the UK's first Cittaslow town and subsequently was the driving force behind the establishment and growth of a national Cittaslow UK network.

Delegates joined Jack in standing to recognise and applaud Graeme's immense contribution to Cittaslow at National and international level.

Thanks were given to Bernard and Margaret Shaw and all their colleagues in Cittaslow Berwick for organising the conference and acting as exceptional hosts. They even organised bright, sunny weather for everyone!

The 2010 Annual Conference is due to be held in Perth, Scotland's first Cittaslow town, which also celebrates its 800th anniversary as a Royal Burgh in 2010.
