Cittaslow UK
Ludlow in Shropshire was the first town in the UK to join the international Cittaslow movement. Community groups, businesses and public agencies in Ludlow sought Cittaslow membership to confirm their town's credentials as a food destination and to promote distinctive and traditional local producers and retailers. As the first UK member town, Cittaslow International charged Ludlow with developing a Cittaslow UK national network. Ludlow's past-Mayor, the late and much-missed Graeme Kidd, was instrumental in spreading the word about Cittaslow to other towns across the UK and the strength and diversity of the current Cittaslow UK network is a lasting testament to his energy and enthusiasm. There are currently nine Cittaslow member towns in England, Scotland and Wales. Our aim is to grow that number with representation from every part of the British Isles. Representatives from Cittaslow UK member towns meet formally 3 or 4 times a year, including at an Annual Conference. These meetings offer opportunities to exchange ideas, identify opportunities for joint projects and to simply develop stronger links between the towns. The 2010 Cittaslow UK Annual Conference will be held in Perth, Scotland on Friday, 26 November as part of the Perth 800 celebrations to mark the 800th anniversary of Perth becoming a Royal Burgh. Members of Cittaslow International's President's Committee from around the world will also meet in Perth over that weekend.
