The annual Mold Spring Clean this year had to be postponed because of Covid-19. Following requests from residents who still want to be involved, Mold Town Council is lending out litter pickers so that people can do a quick clean up during their daily exercise.
This would have been the eleventh Mold Spring Clean and in previous years a massive 600 plus willing volunteers have helped to collect over 300 bags of waste, restock flower beds, paint benches and generally spruce up the town.
Mold Town Councillor, Andrea Mearns said, “As in previous years we were working with Keep Wales Tidy, who had asked us this year to identify the types of litter collected during the litter picks. This information helps to inform future Welsh Government legislation designed to reduce the production of single-use products, especially plastics. The Mold Plastic Reduction group had hoped to do a litter pick, and then spread out the contents of their black bags in a corner of Daniel Owen Square on Saturday, to count the items and for people to see what was being littered, but that will have to wait for another time.
“Worldwide and in the UK the most littered item is cigarette butts, and they contain plastic filters. 320 tonnes of plastic were generated globally in 2016, which is set to double by 2034.
“I borrowed a litter picker and yesterday picked along a 300 metre section of pavement and hedge row on the west side of Mold. I spread out the half a black bag of rubbish I collected and counted 83 pieces of paper products; 74 plastic; 26 cigarette butts; 17 cans and metals; 8 fabric items including wet wipes; 4 glass; and shockingly 5 dog waste bags and 4 pairs of blue disposable gloves.”
Sarah Pratt a member of the Mold Plastic Reduction steering group said “I borrowed a litter picker from Mold Town Council and picked up half a bin bag of rubbish by the River Alyn. There would have been more but a like-minded gentleman had already done half our route! Most prevalent was poo bags, both full and empty. Quite a few polystyrene cups. McDonalds was the most frequent brand. If you are taking your daily exercise / dog walk and would like to spring clean please request a litter picker and bag from Mold Town Council.”
